For the last week of the Pentecost holidays, S, his family, and I visited the beautiful village of Hintersee which sits next to the gorgeous lake of the same name. Last year, we also visited Berchtesgadener Land (an alpine region in southern Bavaria) for my husband’s family’s annual reunion, but everyone loved the area so much that we decided to return again this year, albeit to a different village.
We stayed at the perfectly situated CVJM Alpen Experience Activity Centre in Hintersee; it’s the little white and brown building visible in my photo above. The family holiday flat where we stayed had the most amazing balcony and view of the lake – I couldn’t imagine anywhere more picturesque.
There’s so much to do in the area, especially if you love exploring the outdoors. Here are some of my favourite activities that we did during our holiday:
Rent a Rowboat on the Hintersee
The CVJM has their own little rowboats that guests can rent on an hourly basis. If you’re a day-tripper or are staying at another accommodation, there are separate private rowboats for rent along the lake. The 7 of us piled into 2 boats one sunny afternoon for a lovely row around the lake. The water is calm and turquoise green, making for an idyllic afternoon boat ride.
Hike to the Zauberwald
On our first day at Hintersee, we went on a leisurely 1.5 hour hike to the Zauberwald (Magical Forest). The first part of the hike runs along the Hintersee, then it splits further into the forest alongside the ice blue Klausbach River. Beautiful stroll suitable for hikers of all ages.

Day Trip to Salzburg
Hintersee is only about a 40km drive away from Salzburg, Austria, so it makes a convenient day trip. We spent the afternoon exploring the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, trekking up to the Hohensalzburg Castle for spectacular views of the city below, and enjoying an Austrian lunch at the Sternbräu, a traditional beer garden tucked away in a quiet courtyard in the middle of the city.
