It’s hard to believe that 2016 is almost over – it feels like we were all saying goodbye to 2015 only yesterday.
Last year I started my blog Instagram account, kaffeeundkuchenblog. I love taking and sharing photos of my travels and life in Germany through this platform and often use my Instagram photos to complement my blog posts on Kaffee und Kuchen. Like last year, I thought I would take a trip down memory lane and compile my top 10 favourite Instagram photos of 2016 to share with you.
2016 was a fun-filled year of travel both in Germany and abroad. Many of these pics also remind me of my best memories and experiences from the year. Without further ado, here are my top Instagram photos of 2016 in chronological order (I’m not playing favourites this time!)
My Top 10 Favourite Instagram Photos of 2016
10. St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Czech Republic
I visited Prague for the first time this year and was immediately smitten by the gorgeous architecture. The light dusting of snow during our visit in early January was the icing on the cake (pun intended) of our scenic trip to the Czech capital. My favourite Instagram photo from Prague is this one of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle covered in snow – simply beautiful.
9. A half-timbered building on the river in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany
Esslingen am Neckar is a small, lovely town near Stuttgart. I’ve visited this charming city a handful of times and am always taken by the inner city and old half-timbered buildings. This photo is a quintessential one of Esslingen so I was excited when it was featured by Deutschland Greatshots.
8. The Hamburg Rathaus in Hamburg, Germany
Our trip to Hamburg was booked on a whim – we got this harbour destination selected for us when we did our first Blind Booking with Eurowings. Though fairly chilly in mid February when we visited, Hamburg captured our hearts with its metropolitan vibe, amazing food, and water views. The Hamburg Rathaus is one of the key landmarks in the city (and with good reason).
7. The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada
In March we flew to Toronto to surprise my Mom for her birthday where she and my Dad were meeting up with my siblings and their families. It was a great surprise and a fun trip filled with delicious meals out, a fantastic food tour of Kensington Market, and a visit to the superb Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).
6. Park Güell in Barcelona, Spain
I had a really hard time picking a favourite photo from our trip to Barcelona in the spring because I have so many, but this one captures one of the most memorable sights we saw in the city, Park Güell designed by Antoni Gaudí. The mosaic terrace is one of a kind and offers a fantastic view of the city below.
5. A lake view in Hintersee, Germany
Our May visit to Hintersee in Berchtesgadener Land is one I won’t soon forget – the turquoise blue lake is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in Germany.

4. A view of downtown Vancouver, Canada
I have so many great memories of my trip back to Canada this summer – visiting with friends and family, watching the Celebration of Light fireworks, trying new restaurants, exploring Gastown, and going on our family’s annual trip to Vancouver Island. This picture of downtown Vancouver from Vanier Park is one of my favourites because it’s taken along the route I used to jog when I lived in Vancouver.
3. The Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival, Ludwigsburg, Germany
For the past three years, I’ve visited the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival (Ludwigsburg Kürbisausstellung) which happens to be the largest pumpkin festival in the world. This year’s theme was ‘Welcome to the Circus’ so there were lots of whimsical and magical elements to the displays. I love this little white bunny popping out of the magician’s hat in front of the Ludwigsburg Schloss.
2. The Little Princess Statue and Buda Castle, Budapest, Hungary
Our third Blind Booking flight this year was to Budapest for my birthday weekend and the trip was one of my highlights of the year. There is so much to see and do in the city and the architecture is spectacular. We soaked in thermal baths, ate some of the best Lángos I’ve ever had, and took a whirlwind city tour. This shot of Buda Castle at dusk on our first night in the city makes me smile with the memory of our spontaneous and wonderful trip.
1. Würzburger Weihnachtsmarkt in Würzburg, Germany
2016 saw a lot of change for us, the biggest being our move from Stuttgart to Würzburg. With this move came many challenges, but also many opportunities to meet new people and explore new areas. We took full advantage of our new locale when it came to checking out Christmas markets this year. We saw 11 in total (wow, was it really 11?!), the majority for the first time. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to write about any of them (ahh!) before the Christmas market season was over, but I hope to do a nice summary of them in November next year for readers looking for recommendations. In any case, of all my Christmas market photos from this year, this one of the Würzburg Christmas Market is my favourite because of the beautiful dusk lighting.
So there you go – my top 10 favourite Instagram photos of 2016. Here were YOUR top 9 favourite Instagram photos of mine! Thanks for your likes, comments and features!
As a fun side note, I had a few of my photos featured by other Instagram accounts this year, such as my photo #9 above of Esslingen am Neckar by @deutschland_greatshots, as well as my photo of the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona by @thebarcelonist, and my photo of the Ochsenfurt Christmas market by @srs_germany. Such a thrill to be featured by these IG communities!
As my final blog post of the year, I’d like to say thank you so much for reading my blog, writing comments, sending me emails and for following along with my expat journey on social media. I have so enjoyed connecting with you all and I look forward to staying in touch in 2017!
Happy New Year and all the best in 2017!
