You know that summer is on its way when the annual Würzburger Weindorf (Würzburg Wine Village) pops up in town. The 31st annual Würzburger Weindorf kicked off on May 24th and will be running until June 5th this year. The well-loved Weindorf festival features 12 different wine suppliers/wineries at the city’s Marktplatz (main square). More than 100 different local Franconian wines are served at the stands set up throughout the square. Popular local providers include Juliusspital Weinstuben, Ratskeller, Alte Mainmühle, among several others. Each stand has its own rows of benches and tables where you can sit down and enjoy a glass or two of wine and traditional Franconian fare.
After a brief walk through the Weindorf last week, S and I made time to go to the festival this past Friday for a proper visit. We chose to check out Trattoria Augusto, an Italian stand, because their Bowle offers caught our eye. Bowle is a type of fruit-spiked wine punch commonly served at festivals and parties. There are all kinds of Bowle recipes but most consist of chilled white wine mixed with juice, lemonade or sparkling wine (Sekt). Other spirits like rum can be added to the punch or red wine can be used instead of white wine. Popular fruits used to flavour the Bowle include strawberries, pineapples or peaches.
S ordered the Augustobowle, a punch made of elderflower syrup, lime, and mint, while I went with my personal favourite, Erdbeerbowle (strawberry punch). These were my first strawberries of the year and they really got me excited for berry season here in Germany!
