One project that S and I have tackled is redecorating the living room in our flat. During our long-distance Skype chats, I noticed that the light fixtures were not included anywhere in the flat (fun fact – German apartments do not come with any additional fixtures like light coverings, cabinets, even sometimes the kitchen sink!). The wall was painted a delightful Shamrock green colour by the previous tenant and we thought that this might not be the best shade to pair with S’s new red couch. (S has also asked me twice to say that the green was not his choosing, nor did he realize how ugly the colour was until after we actually repainted). And so the redecorating began! Good thing we only live 15 minutes away from IKEA and some home decorating stores.
Greetings from Germany! After my first week and a half living in a small town in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, I am beginning to adjust to my new life here. The language and culture pose challenges at times (more on that later), I don’t know many people yet, and have yet to venture onto the local buses and trains, but I am taking it in one day at a time. Thankfully I have S by my side to help guide the way into German life.
First things first…we had to add a light fixture so we scoured IKEA for some ideas. We saw this hanging lamp tucked behind some other plain lampshades and thought it would be perfect since we were planning to paint the wall grey. Shortly after, we got a fluffy white blanket and couch pillows to add some personality to the couch.
Next came the paint. We went to OBI, a big hardware store similar to Home Depot to buy paint and painting supplies. While I understand from speaking with others that choosing a paint colour can take several agonizing hours examining and comparing each and every shade, surprisingly S and I settled on ‘Grey 1’ quite quickly. I think it helped that OBI only had a handful of grey shades to choose from which made the decision-making process decidedly easier. We also bought some equipment to hang the lamp. As the store was minutes from closing, I spotted a grey rug that would fit in with our new decor, so into the shopping cart that went, too.
